Day-Long “Cigars for Heroes” hosted in Bristol for Fallen Marines
Shawn Nelson, Steve Spernak and the families of three Orange County Marines who died this summer came up with a new way to honor fallen Marines last Sunday, according to the Orange County Register. Spernak and Nelson, inveterate cigar smokers, arranged with Santa Ana tobacconist Ribhi Saoud to host a day-long “Cigars for Heroes” tribute at Saoud’s shop on Bristol.
At least 50 people gathered for the tribute smoking cigars – not all of them men. All types of care packages were accepted, but the families specific and primary goal was to send cigars to the Marines still serving overseas.
Nelson said, when a Marine or soldier overseas “gets a box of cigars, you’re a king for a week” in your unit. Saoud offered a deal for participants to buy three from him, and he’d give the customer a fourth to donate to the Marines. Around 500-600 cigars were donated to the cause.
Beverly Hills Cigar Club Offers Three Great Picks for a Laid Back Labor Day
For this Labor Day, Vin Lee, Beverly Hills Cigar Club CEO, has pulled out his best pick of the sticks — three top drawer smokes to go along with any level of celebration to cap off the summer.
For the beginning cigar enthusiast, Vin suggests the Alec Bradley Prensado. This full bodied, sophisticated cigar was rated a 93 by Cigar Insider. A superbly constructed Honduras cigar designed for a weekend celebration of the good life, it is box pressed, giving even the most amateur smoker that extra hint of style that will impress the ladies. Next, Lee encourages his fellow cigar enthusiasts to enjoy this year’s Labor Day with the Rocky Patel Decade. This fine Sumatra cigar was 10 years in the making. With a 95 rating from Cigar Insider, the Rocky Patel Decade is a great compliment to one of Lee’s own picks, the 2008 Native Yeast Chardonnay of Iron Horse Vineyards, especially if sharing both with that special someone. Cigar Aficionados, the true keepers of the leaf, should lock the humidor this Labor Day weekend. Keep all that vintage tobacco “on ice” and celebrate the coming of fall humming one of Lee’s suggested favorites, a 601 Blue Label Maduro by tobacco genius Pepin Garcia and Miami’s own Eric “Shorty” Espinosa. Of course it wouldn’t do that cigar justice to smoke a Blue Label if you didn’t drink one as well. So make sure to invite Johnny Walker along on your trip to Baja. Lee does suggest you press your cubes with AquaHydrate Mineral Water. No sense in watering Walker down with anything less.

Naples Store Owner Sells $16,000 Box of HMR Cigars
Despite the bad economy and high prices, at least one customer in East Naples is spending $16,000 for a box of Majesty’s Reserve cigars, twice. Each box contains 20 cigars, making that an $800 smoke per cigar.
Naplesnews.com reports that another customer at Naples Bay Tobacco is set to buy a box this week.
Each cigar is filled with a bottle of Louis VIII cognac, with a 12-year-old binder and 15-year-old wrapper and take about 3 to 4 years to produce. The cigars are packaged in a large wooden box, carved to look like a book and comes with a lock and key.
Only 70 boxes of Majesty’s Reserve cigars were made this year and store owner, Osvaldo Pla, listed baseball player Alex Rodriguez and actor Matthew McConaughey as two loyal clients.
Pla described the clients who are purchasing the HMR boxes as wealthy businessmen who are still willing to pay for luxury, according to Naples News.
Pla has been in business at his store, 2260 U.S. 41 E., for about a year and with loyal clients purchasing $16,000 boxes, it looks like his business will survive through this economy.

Spotlight on PANA Cigars

Photo from PuffingCigars.com
PANA Cigars is officially the newest entry in the world of boutique cigar making. Produced in Arizona, PANA Cigars is the creation of Pablo Enchinton, who has spent the past two years developing the brand and vision.
“Our name came about while looking for a meaning of what I think a cigar symbolizes,” says Enchinton. ”The word PANA means friend in my Latin culture and I thought of how perfect it would be to launch a cigar company with the foundation of friendship at its core, in its name!”
The two blends being produced are a Ligero Maduro and Connecticut Especial. Unlike similar boutique producers, Enchinton has sourced some of the best tobacco from the Dominican Republic and has full control over the blending process, he notes.
If you’re interested in discovering other new cigar producers and products, the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers annual show will be in New Orleans August 9 – 13, 2010. Check back with Cigar Club News for a spotlight on what’s unveiled.

Ready to plan a trip to cigar country?
If you’re a wine connoisseur, consider the appeal of traveling to wine country.
For wine enthusiasts novice and expert alike, an experience in wine country strengthens the affinity for the wines, their makers and the regions where they are produced. With many “new” wine regions springing up across the U.S., wine-marketed travel has become a must-have experience for wine enthusiasts.
Can the same happen for cigar enthusiasts?
Cigar travel, writes Tom Johansmeyer, is bringing a new personal experience to cigar consumers. Some of the most respected cigar manufacturers are using interactive marketing to draw visitors to the factories, some located on the actual harvest fields, to learn about and experience first-hand the cigars they enjoy.
In addition to an educational experience, the chance to mingle with some of the top personalities and minds behind the brands is making cigar travel a viable alternative to advertising.
